I’m a chartered accountant who’s learned how to change a lightbulb using only my teeth, while standing in a overflowing bath and balancing the toaster on my head. Of course the toaster’s fallen in the bath more than once, but I learnt a little each time. Ever since I can remember I wanted to be a pilot or an astronaut, I settled for the next best thing, being an accountant with an astronomical appetite for technology.
I find my energy through sharing and connecting ideas to solve hard problems. I have found over and over again that what is difficult or hard to me, is solved through persistent searching, questioning and sharing. Meaningful friendships are built up over time, and especially when it’s hard, there is nothing like coming out the other side together. Business is about people and partnering with good people making it meaningful.
My approach is always top down, and working bottom up, ensuring the big ideas connect and deliver real results, supported by detailed analysis & people’s experience. One example is Auckland-based Solution Dynamics Limited, which I founded in 1996 as Marketing Data Services and listed in 2004. SDL is now a thriving provider of direct customer communications; its solutions link customers to more than 40 million users worldwide.

Along the way, I picked up some serious skills in cloud architecture (yes, AWS is my playground), building scalable systems, and figuring out how to turn complex problems into practical solutions that actually help businesses run better.
I’ve worked with all kinds of people — product folks, finance teams, stakeholders of all stripes — and I really enjoy translating big ideas into real results. I’m a big fan of agile and lean ways of working, and nothing makes me happier than seeing a team grow, own their work, and crush it.
Oh, and I’m not just about the code. I’ve also run IT operations, tightened up cybersecurity, and made systems smoother and smarter. Bonus: I’ve got a solid handle on accounting practices and software too — so finance doesn’t scare me. In fact, I kinda like it.
